It’s ROSÉ. It’s JUICY. It’s SUPERB…
Sancerre, the home of classy Sauvignon Blanc, also produces some phenomenal rosé. Head due south from Paris and you’ll find the village of Crezancy where David Sautereau has 22 hectares of vineyards in the Loire Valley. He uses pinot noir grapes for this wine with a light pressing and cool fermentation that retains the pure, red fruit character of the grape while three months on the lees provides extra complexity (lees are the dead yeast cells left after fermentation – wine aged on the lees gains body and richness).
Bottled six months after the harvest to retain freshness this wine is pale salmon in the glass with wild strawberry and white flowers on the nose followed by juicy peach and raspberry on the palate. Delicious drunk on its own but also wonderful as a pairing with cured meats and spring greens.
